The gnarled hand spanned the foot-and-a-half distance in milliseconds, like the angry branch of an ancient tree. It gripped my arm with hesitation. I continued to stare at its unmoving form. The skin was dry - almost reptilian - catching the light and throwing it right back. There was decades of dirt embedded in it, so deep it might as well have been written in genetic code. I half expected to see cracked, brittle nails, and was slightly disappointed to see smooth, clean cut little stubs affixed to the end of his fingers. My eyes traced the mountains of knotted bone and the large veins that spread along like rivers.

I remembered to breathe, closing my eyes shut, and opening them. I felt my eyes track the expanse of his arm back to his face. A face just as weatherworn and ragged, with slight silver gleaming along his jaw where he had missed shaving. It was the eyes that made no sense. Settled below thick black brows, the large blue orbs glowed with sadness and sympathy. His mouth was a straight line, curled imperceptibly upward at one corner.

And then I somehow started painting Cas? I honestly cannot recall choosing to do this. Help.

Also: colors. Colors everywhere. Maybe someday I’ll do an actual portrait with actual colors. ~~lolprobablynever~~

Composed of Didot characters. The “grey” areas are actual quotes from the series with leading and font size altered to get the appropriate color.

As much as I loved doing this, it was not fun trying to finish it the night before it was due. I wish I could say my lesson was learned. :\

If enough people like it, I may look into offering it as a tshirt design or something. :)

Here are three versions of the Benedict Cumberbatch typographical poster I made.

Let me know which one you’d prefer as the final. I’ll gauge from the first several responses.

Things to note:

I cannot print on black (with the printer these will be going to). I may submit a white on black design to Qwertee, for those interested in this option. (if it fails to get enough votes to be printed, it will be available on Redbubble).

In the mockups above, the t-shirt is white, not grey. So, the final would be simple black on white.

You guys have all been so amazing. I really hope you guys are happy with the final versions.

P.s. Prints, posters, etc. will also be offered, for those interested. The prints will be of the original composition. Keep checking back to my blog (or follow) today - I’ll let you guys know when its available for purchase.

Again, thank you all for the awesome feedback! Who knows, there may be more of these portraits coming soon. ;)

So, I was thinking, if enough people are interested I could set up a live stream? And we can chat and you guys can watch how I work (it’s just going to be a live stream of my monitor, if that changes anything).

Let me know if you’re interested. I’ll probably have time for the live stream this weekend, so let me know and I can work on getting things set up and whatnot. :)

And if more people want it I won’t feel weird about letting people watch me paint and back out of it in blind panic.

The Ritual

She owned a bottle of red nail polish. It was an impossible shade, the type of red one only saw behind closed eyelids while staring at the sun. The nail polish, like all makeup, wasn’t even a luxury anymore. It was sheer stupidity, a waste of priceless time when one could be cleaning their weapons or tending to wounds.

He always sat in front of her, folded up on the ground as she hummed and dragged acrylic over her nails. Her hands were only steady when gripping the metal of a gun. Now, they swept shakily, spreading accidental red over her skin.

He couldn’t remember when it had begun. One day, before they had to head out to look for food, she had flourished the small bottle and dropped to the floor. He’d scoffed then, as he did every time since, and turned away to grab a needle and floss. Within seconds he was forced to turn back, glaring at her as he fought back a cough from the miasma the small bottle was producing. She’d sat on the floor of the dingy cellar, in the center of the only spill of light that came through, oblivious to everything.

She did this again and again, always before they had to shoulder their rifles and bags. Eventually, he would join her. Would drop in front of her, always in front, propped upright by the smell of polish and the insanity around him. She never talked, but he’d mutter about movies and books and things long since killed. When they were lucky, he’d forget about the crumbling buildings and bodies. He never forgot to tell her she was impossible, watching her eyes flash bright and happy for two entire milliseconds every time. Some days it was the most she would say.

He sits alone in the dusty air, twisting the empty bottle shut. He places it on the floor. He stares at the empty space in front of him.

“You’re impossible, you know?”

He grabs his possessions, tucks his life into a backpack, and pads outside to the outrage of sunshine and a clear sky.

What do you guys think? What should I change or make clearer?

I like complementary colors. And Benedict Cumberbatch. So it only makes sense that I combine the two, yes? Yes. So, this happened. Painted for the always amazing Kat as a super late Christmas present (mostly because I suck at prioritizing). Mostly painted while listening to Who Wants to Live Forever by Queen (because why not) and the Sherlock DVD commentary (because jaguar in a cello).

I also included 100% zoomed in details to show how careless I am while painting ~~~

p.s. I personally recommend on clicking the thumbnails, since tumblr crops images a bit. But that’s just me.

Grids, ladies and gentlemen, are awesome.

Not so awesome when you zoom out only to realize you spent the past half hour sketching in the wrong “box” and you have to restart (hence the sloppy numbering to keep track. Learning curves).

WIP. Might start painting tonight. Need to locate my motivation first. :3

Still debating whether I want to paint this in color or black and white.

Kind of lacking inspiration/ideas right now. I spent a good ten minutes just drawing squiggles in photoshop.

Sidenote: it is really hard to draw while laying on your stomach in a soft bed. I cannot feel my left arm.
